Sensitive Teeth: Why That Cold Drink Hurts and How to Find Relief This Summer
You reach for a chilled glass of nimbu paani or a scoop of kulfi on a scorching Delhi afternoon — and suddenly a sharp, sudden zing shoots through your tooth. If that twinge sounds familiar, you are not alone. Tooth sensitivity is one of the most common complaints we hear at DNS Dental Care, especially during the peak summer months when cold treats are everywhere. The good news? Sensitive teeth are very treatable once you understand what is causing them.
What Are Sensitive Teeth?
Your teeth are protected by a hard outer layer of enamel. Underneath sits a softer layer called dentin, which is filled with thousands of tiny channels that lead straight to the nerve. When enamel wears away or your gums recede, the dentin becomes exposed. Cold, hot, sweet, or sour triggers then travel down these channels and reach the nerve, producing that familiar jolt of pain. Dentists call this dentin hypersensitivity, and it can affect one tooth or many at once.
Why Summer Makes It Worse
Delhi summers are tough on teeth. The constant swing between hot weather and ice-cold drinks, sweetened sodas, sherbets, and ice cream puts exposed tooth surfaces under repeated stress. Acidic summer favourites like aam panna, citrus coolers, and fizzy drinks gradually soften the enamel, while sugary frozen treats feed the bacteria that cause decay. Add irregular meal times and frequent snacking during the holidays, and it is easy to see why so many patients notice their sensitive teeth flare up between May and July.
Common Causes of Tooth Sensitivity
Several everyday habits and conditions can leave teeth feeling sensitive:
Aggressive brushing with a hard toothbrush, which wears down enamel and pushes gums back
Gum recession that exposes the soft root surface of the tooth
Acidic foods and drinks that erode the protective enamel over time
Teeth grinding (bruxism), often during sleep, which thins the enamel
Tooth decay, cracked teeth, or worn-out old fillings that expose the inner layers
Recent dental work such as whitening or a cleaning, which usually settles within a few days
How to Get Relief
The right treatment depends on what is behind your sensitivity, which is why a proper check-up matters. In the meantime, these steps help most people:
Switch to a desensitising toothpaste. Products containing potassium nitrate or stannous fluoride calm the nerve and seal the exposed channels. Use it twice a day, and try rubbing a little onto the sensitive area before bed for extra relief. Give it two to four weeks to work.
Be gentle. Use a soft-bristled brush and light pressure. Brushing harder does not clean better — it only damages enamel and gums.
Sip smart. Drink cold and acidic beverages through a straw to keep them away from sensitive tooth surfaces, and rinse with plain water afterwards. Wait about 30 minutes before brushing after anything acidic, so you do not scrub softened enamel.
Lick, do not bite. Enjoy ice cream and kulfi by licking rather than biting down on something frozen and hard.
When to See a Dentist in Lajpat Nagar
Home care helps, but persistent or worsening sensitivity is your body's signal that something needs attention. At DNS Dental Care, we identify the exact cause and offer targeted treatments such as professional fluoride varnish, sealing of exposed surfaces, bonding for worn tooth necks, a custom night guard for grinding, or gum treatment where recession is involved. Catching the problem early often means a simpler, more affordable fix. If a cold drink makes you wince every single time, do not just live with it — sensitive teeth rarely improve on their own.
